Michael Clark Becomes Fully Qualified Actuary:

Intellica’s First Graduate Hire!

Share

Intellica is delighted to celebrate a significant professional and organisational milestone. Michael Clark, who joined us as our first‑ever graduate hire in 2021, has officially become a qualified Actuary and an Associate of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) – a major step in any actuary’s career, and a proud moment for our business.

Today, Intellica has grown

to over 70 employees and operates at the forefront of data‑driven pension solutions and actuarial technology

Watching Intellica grow

has been incredible

Michael’s recent success in the CP1 – Actuarial Practice exam marks the culmination of a highly disciplined journey. Over just three years, Michael has passed 10 actuarial exams, a pace far ahead of the norm and one that demonstrates not just technical expertise, but exceptional focus, resilience, and ambition.

A Standout Professional Achievement

Michael’s journey is especially notable given the dual challenges of working full‑time while studying for exams that demand hundreds of hours of preparation. His most recent exam, CP1, required mastering over 1,300 pages of technical content – a feat that, for Michael, meant long weekends, early preparation, and rigorous discipline.

“There’s no shortcut to becoming an actuary – it’s long hours, forward planning, and consistent hard work,” Michael says. “I’ve been fortunate to work on challenging client projects throughout, where I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work directly with trustees, sponsors and stakeholders. That practical exposure has been just as important to my development as the exams.”

With his Associate status now secured, Michael has just two specialist exams remaining on his journey to becoming a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. He’s currently deciding between specialisms in Pensions and Corporate Benefits, which aligns closely with his current work, or Enterprise Risk Management, which offers broader industry reach.

From Graduate Hire to Company Pillar

Michael joined Intellica in November 2021, when the company was still in its early growth phase. At the time, the team was small and agile, operating from a shared workspace. Today, Intellica has grown to over 70 employees and operates at the forefront of data‑driven pension solutions and actuarial technology. Michael has been part of that journey from the very beginning.

“Watching Intellica grow has been incredible,” Michael says. “I’ve had the chance to work on major projects, lead training sessions, and be part of conversations with senior leadership. That level of exposure and responsibility at such an early stage in my career has been invaluable.”

Michael has contributed to a wide range of pension projects, including GMP equalisation and rectification programmes. He also plays a key role in internal capability building, running cross‑functional training on tools such as SQL and Excel, alongside actuarial concepts.

A Message from Brendan Doherty, CEO

“Michael’s achievement is not just a personal milestone – it’s a reflection of the culture we’ve built at Intellica. He joined us as our first graduate, and from the start, he has demonstrated the kind of integrity, curiosity, and determination that we value so highly.

Passing ten actuarial exams in just three years, all while delivering high‑quality work for our clients, is nothing short of exceptional. Michael represents the future of our profession, and we’re immensely proud to have supported him on this journey.

On behalf of the whole Intellica team, congratulations Michael – you’ve set the bar high.”

Advice for the Next Generation

Michael’s story is not just about technical achievement; it’s a reminder of what’s possible when ambition meets opportunity. For aspiring actuaries, he offers clear advice:

“Believe in yourself, even if others don’t. Work hard, and don’t let your background define your future. Take every opportunity to learn, network, and understand what the actuarial profession really involves. And when things get tough, as they inevitably do, keep going. It’s worth it.”

Outside of work, Michael unwinds by spending time with friends, travelling, watching cricket and football, and yes, still enjoying the occasional video game session.

Looking Ahead

Michael’s success is part of a broader story at Intellica. With a strong pipeline of graduates and junior analysts now progressing through their own exams and projects, he’s far from an outlier – he’s the first of many. The next generation of actuarial talent is already following closely in his footsteps.

Michael’s next steps include preparing for the two final specialist exams that will earn him Fellowship status. But beyond that, he’s focused on continuing to grow his leadership within Intellica and helping others in the business achieve their own goals.

His journey from new graduate to qualified actuary, mentor, and trainer is a story of dedication and evolution, and one that reflects the values we aim to foster across our entire business.

Congratulations once again, Michael, from all of us at Intellica.
